My Teaching & Mentoring

In my work teaching scientific writing, my overarching goal is to help students, especially those who have been traditionally excluded from academia, navigate academic systems like publishing and funding. More broadly, I nurture our future scientific leaders' communication skills so that our field can prioritize clarity and connection in both established and newly-emerging genres.

I am currently the Assistant Director of Scientific Communication in the Graduate Writing Lab, within Yale's Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning. In this role, I oversee a team of 10+ Graduate Writing Fellows in STEM as they lead peer writing groups and writing workshops, I teach writing in 1st and 2nd year PhD classes, and I develop resources aimed at improving the broader writing culture at Yale (and, hopefully, in science generally!).
Previous Teaching & Editing:

Research Development Fellow, Drs. Valentina Greco and Valerie Reinke, Yale Genetics. 2021-2023.
I wrote grants and mentored students through writing research manuscripts. Topics include stem cells, cancer, epigenetics & gene expression, and RNA biology.
Writing Fellow and Professional Development Coordinator, Graduate Writing Lab, Yale University.  2017-2021.
I coached graduate students and postdocs in the sciences through writing manuscripts, dissertations, and fellowship applications; led peer-review groups for fellowship and dissertation writing; taught writing workshops; and in 2020-2021 coordinated all programming on fellowship applications in the sciences.
Teaching Fellow for the undergraduate courses "Genes & Development" (100-level) and "Molecular Biology" (200-level). Responsibilities included designing and leading weekly discussion sections and guiding students through their first original scientific research proposal.

Writing Consultant and Head Consultant in the Center for Writing and Public Discourse, Claremont McKenna College. 2011-2014.
I worked one-on-one with undergraduates in all disciplines to improve their academic writing and presentations. As Head Consultant (2013-2014), I led weekly staff training meetings, and developed and executed workshops and outreach events on topics ranging from fellowship applications to poetry.
Selected Workshops I've Taught:

"
Fellowship Writing in STEM: the NSF GRFP"
“Publishing in the Biomedical Sciences”
"Writing Clearly and Convincingly: Taking the Reader's Perspective"

"Presenting Your Science Engagingly"
“Poster Preparation in the Sciences”
“Writing Your Personal Statement for Ph.D. Programs”

Selected Resources I've Developed:

National Institutes of Health NRSA F30/F31: Quick Start Guide.”
